Timing of the move

3-6 months before the move
- Terminate rental agreement
Internet and TV providers, insurance companies, etc. often have a long notice period. Check exactly what needs to be canceled or terminated and when. Make a list so that you don’t forget anything. - Organize a change of school
- For an international move: check the expiration date of travel documents and any visas
2 months before the move
- Contact and book a removal company or hire a large car and enlist the help of friends and family
- Measuring the new apartment: which furniture and objects fit, which do not. What do I want to take with me, what do I give away and how do I dispose of the items I won’t be taking with me? Make a list.
- Which objects fit through the doorway, window, etc.?
- Ordering or altering new curtains, carpets, floor coverings
- Organize temporary accommodation until the keys are handed over
1 month before the move
- Communicate new address to all institutions and companies such as bank, pension fund, suppliers, doctors, mail forwarding service, electricity/gas/water, insurance, internet provider (see also above list 3-6 months before the move) or
- Order new connections for telephone/Internet etc.
- Sort out: go into every room of the old apartment and sort out everything that has to go, is being given away and is being moved.
- Items that are rarely used can be packed up straight away. Have a look at Boxly’s packing tips.
- Valuables and important documents: pack them in such a way that you can transport them yourself.
- Buy moving boxes, protective film, adhesive tape, etc.
- Request a day off from the employer
- Organize babysitters and pet sitters during the move
- Contact cleaning institute
2 weeks before the move
- Sort out food and supplies
- Check parking facilities and their permits. Where should the removal van, other vehicles and possibly a lift be parked? Is this subject to authorization?
- Dismantling large pieces of furniture
- Rent storage space. Contact us for possible storage options
1 week before the move
- Have you rented a storage room? Then store your things now. See also the Boxly self-storage tips on how you can make the most of it
- Arrange a key handover date
- Pack suitcases: clothes and towels for each family member, toiletries, bed linen
- Pack a household bag: drinks, lunch, snacks, chargers, kitchen utensils, first aid kit, etc.
- Pack a document bag: keys, assembly instructions, moving documents, inventory list, passports, etc.
A few days before the move
- Defrosting the refrigerator and freezer
- Further reduce food
- Check details, time, directions, telephone numbers etc. again with the removal company or helpers
On moving day
- Sign the inventory list before the removal van departs
- Report any problems directly with photos
